What Does CBD Stand For?
CBD (short for Cannabidiol) is an endocannabinoid, which simply means “it is some substance found within cannabis”. Although cannabis is know for containing THC, which is also an endocannabinoid; as with any other plant, there are countless other substances within it, and CBD is one of them.
What Is CBD Good For?
CBD was first identified in 1940 and has been extensively studied since then. It is NON-PSYCHOACTIVE, meaning it will not give a “high”, and is exclusively used for its health benefits. The primary use of CBD is for: pain-management; the control of epilepsy (especially in children); and its anti-anxiety and anti-psychotic effects. It is also not prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency, leading to its use by professional athletes, even during competition. It has also been shown to actually counter-act the adverse intoxication and sedation effects of THC, when taken at a high dosage.
Is CBD Safe?
Safety studies into the adverse side effects of CBD, have shown minimal reaction, the worst of which being drowsiness, decreased appetite, diarrhea, and possible restless sleep. These are less than the effects associated with over-the-counter drugs such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl).
Clearing up the Confusion
There a lot of Hemp and CBD infused products on the market nowadays, leading to a lot of confusion for consumers. This is often done intentionally, in order to pass off inferior quality products.
CBD (Cannabidiol) is the active substance itself but is frequently used as an abbreviated reference to CBD Oil. The reason this is significant is because CBD is available as an “isolate”, where the CBD is extracted from the plant, highly processed, and concentrated into a powder. As with any highly processed product, many beneficial substances like nutrients are lost and the result is highly lacking. To make it worse, poor-quality producers suspend this isolate in generic oil, like cooking oil, and call it CBD-oil.
Real CBD oil is Full-Spectrum CBD oil. The difference is that this oil is extracted directly from cannabis plants which are specifically bred to have a high-CBD, low-THC content. It is then minimally processed and filtered to remove THC, but retains the other beneficial substances naturally occurring in the plant. This provides a much more natural, effective, and true-quality product.
As a point of comparison, it’s like the difference between a High-quality specially-sourced extra-virgin olive oil, and some generic vegetable oil with a splash of low-grade processed olive oil mixed in.
There is also a different product called Hemp-seed Oil. This is an oil squeezed from the seeds of a hemp plant. Although CBD-oil can use hemp seeds in its production, it also uses other parts of the plant, and only specific high-CBD breeds of plant. Hemp-seed oil is often produced from industrial hemp-breeds, which can have low, if any, CBD-content, and therefore is not CBD-oil. That said, hemp-oil does have its own nutritional benefits.
